چکیده

In 3D virtual environments and social scenes, virtual characters are not always visible from a front view. Nonverbal expressions of emotions should be designed so as to be properly perceived when viewed from multiple angles. Our platform enables the design of facial expressions including 3D expressive wrinkles and 3D postures. It was used to generate stimuli for studying the impact of front versus side views on the perception of blends of facial and postural expressions of emotions. Results observed in previous studies for front views of incongruent images are confirmed for side views. Furthermore, subjects were less confident in their ratings for side views images than for front

User’s Gestural Exploration of Different Virtual Agents’ Expressive Profiles (Short Paper)

Designing affective user interfaces involving expressive characters raises several questions. The system should be able to display facial expressions of complex emotions as dynamic and realtime reactions to user’s inputs. From a cognitive point of view, designers need to know how the user will perceive the dynamics of these facial expressions as a function of his/her input. We aim at evaluating...

Combining Facial and Postural Expressions of Emotions in a Virtual Character

Psychology suggests highly synchronized expressions of emotion across different modalities. Few experiments jointly studied the relative contribution of facial expression and body posture to the overall perception of emotion. Computational models for expressive virtual characters have to consider how such combinations will be perceived by users. This paper reports on two studies exploring how s...

Perceptually Valid Facial Expressions for Character-Based Applications

This paper addresses the problem of creating facial expression of mixed emotions in a perceptually valid way. The research has been done in the context of a “game-like” health and education applications aimed at studying social competency and facial expression awareness in autistic children as well as native language learning, but the results can be applied to many other applications such as ga...

Virtual Faces Expressing Emotions: An Initial Concomitant and Construct Validity Study

BACKGROUND Facial expressions of emotions represent classic stimuli for the study of social cognition. Developing virtual dynamic facial expressions of emotions, however, would open-up possibilities, both for fundamental and clinical research. For instance, virtual faces allow real-time Human-Computer retroactions between physiological measures and the virtual agent. OBJECTIVES The goal of th...
